SBI Holders Alert ! SBI warns customers of KYC fraud, shares tips to keep account safe from scammers

Apart from urging customers to report cybercrimes on the government portal, SBI shared three safety mantras for people to avoid KYC fraud and keep their money safe




New Delhi: With technology and internet penetration increasing in India, online fraud and cybercrimes have been on the rise, During the Covid-19 pandemic, these frauds have become even more rampant. Fraudsters are misusing sensitive information and financial data of customers and pose a threat to their online privacy.

Amid the increasing cases of Know Your Customer (KYC) frauds, India’s largest commercial bank, State Bank of India (SBI) warned its customers against an increase in online KYC fraud. The bank in a statement said that cases of KYC fraud are real, and it has proliferated across the country.

SBI warned its customers on its official Twitter handle and said there have been instances where fraudsters duped people with KYC verification. It tweeted, “KYC fraud is real, and it has proliferated across the country. The fraudster sends a text message pretending to be a bank/company representative to get your personal details. Report such cybercrimes here: http://cybercrime.gov.in #StateBankOfIndia #CyberCrime #StaySafeStayVigilant”

The bank recently allowed its customers to update their KYC via mail or post during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision was taken as customers were facing difficulties completing their formalities amid the novel coronavirus. The lender also shared safety mantras to avoid KYC fraud and protect account against such scams.

Apart from urging customers to report cybercrimes on the government portal, SBI shared three safety mantras for people to avoid KYC fraud. These three tips are:

Think before you click any link: Customers must be very careful before clicking any link, especially when they get any message saying that their account will be blocked if they fail to click it.

The bank never sends links to update KYC: The bank said that it never sends any links to customers to update their KYC. So, there are chances that fraudsters pose as bank representatives and dupe people.

Don’t share your mobile number and confidential data with anyone: SBI warned its customers not to share their mobile number and confidential information with any third party.

The lender has asked its customers to immediately report any unauthorised or suspicious bank transactions in their bank accounts. One can report any unauthorised transaction in their bank account by calling toll-free customer care numbers 18004253800 and 1800112211.

One can also file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, an initiative of the government to curb cybercrimes against women and children. Customers are required to provide correct details at the time of filing the complaint so that prompt action can be taken.
