New Delhi: The Election Commission has initiated preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the national capital, and individuals whose names are not on the 2002 voter list will now be required to submit their identity documents. The dates for the commencement of the SIR process will be announced later.

According to an official statement, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to conduct the SIR process across the country to uphold the integrity of the voter lists, in line with its constitutional mandate. The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Delhi has also begun preparations for this process.

Booth Level Officers (BLOs) appointed for assembly constituencies

A statement said that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been appointed in all assembly constituencies. It further stated that all concerned officials—District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, and the BLOs—have been trained.

The CEO office has requested the public to check the 2002 voter list to verify their names and those of their parents. The statement added, “This will be helpful during the door-to-door verification process by the BLOs, when they will collect the necessary documents and registration forms from the public. Those whose names appear in both the 2002 and 2025 voter lists will only need to submit the 2002 voter list along with the registration form.”

What to do if your name is not in the 2002 voter list?

The statement said that if a voter’s name is not in the 2002 voter list but their parents’ names are, they must submit proof of identity along with the verification form and a copy of the 2002 voter list entry for their parents. The Delhi CEO office has uploaded the voter list of the Special Summary Revision (SSR) conducted in 2002, and also provided a mapping of the current assembly constituencies with the existing constituencies of 2002, which is available on the website.

SSR sparks political controversy

The SSR of the voter list in Bihar, conducted for the first time since 2003, has sparked a major political controversy. Opposition parties have alleged that the purpose of this process is to disenfranchise people, while the Election Commission says the aim of the SSR is to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the voter list and no ineligible voter is included.

According to the findings of the SSR, the total number of registered voters in Bihar was 7.9 crore before this process, which has now decreased to 7.24 crore. The results of the Special Summary Revision-2025 released this year by the Delhi CEO office show that there are 1,55,24,858 registered voters in the national capital, including 83,49,645 male, 71,73,952 female, and 1,261 transgender voters.
