Stock Market Closed: Important news has come for investors and traders who invest in the stock market. The markets will be closed during the trading session of Thursday, January 15. According to a notification issued by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the markets will be closed on January 15, 2026. The stock markets, i.e. BSE-NSE, will be closed on January 15, 2026. The commodity market will be closed for the day. Although the markets will be open in the evening for commodity derivatives, there will be no trading in the morning.

According to the notification issued by the NSE, the decision has been taken to keep the stock market closed due to the BMC elections. There are BMC (Municipal Corporation) elections in Mumbai on January 15, 2026, due to which the markets will be closed on January 15, 2026.

What did Anil Singhvi say about the market closure?

Market guru Anil Singhvi commented on the decision, noting that the headquarters of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are in Mumbai. Singhvi further added that Mumbai is home to all the institutions associated with the stock market, including brokers and banks.

He further stated that voting would have been difficult for these people if the markets were open. In such a situation, the notification issued by the market exchange may bring relief to those involved in the market. He further stated that since it is a holiday, people should vote responsibly.

Markets were not closed earlier

The previous notification issued by the stock exchange last week did not include the markets being closed. The exchange announced that January 15th would be observed as a settlement holiday, and trading would resume thereafter.

However, the exchange has now revised the previous notification. However, according to the new notification issued on January 12th, the stock market will remain closed. It should be noted that settlement holidays are observed during elections or major public events that impact the banking and clearing systems. Since January 15th is a public holiday in the state, most banks will be closed on that day.

When will the markets be closed in the future?

Markets will be closed on January 15, 2026, but stock markets will also be closed on other days. In 2026, India’s stock markets will be closed for a total of 16 days. January 26th will be the second holiday in January. Markets will be closed on the following days:

March 3 – Holi
March 26 – Ram Navami
March 31 – Mahavir Jayanti
April 3 – Good Friday
April 14 – Ambedkar Jayanti
May 1 – Maharashtra Day
May 28 – Bakrid

How were the stock markets today?

The decline that had been continuing for the past five trading sessions ended on Monday, and the stock market saw a strong comeback. The Nifty closed at 25,790, up 107 points, while the Sensex rose 301 points to close at 83,878. The market experienced a strong recovery throughout the day. During intraday trading, the Nifty slipped below 25,500, but recorded a significant jump of nearly 300 points from the lows.

This strength was largely due to positive signals regarding a trade deal between India and the United States. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said that negotiations on a trade deal between the two countries will resume on January 13th. This statement comes at a time when US President Donald Trump is adopting an aggressive stance on tariffs. Recently, Trump warned India against purchasing oil from Russia, threatening to impose a 500% tariff. Due to this uncertainty, Nifty saw a decline of about 2.5% last week and closed at the level of 25,683.
