US Student Visa Status: Students who have secured admission for the Fall intake in the US are now preparing to catch their flights. However, only those students who possess a student visa can fly to the United States. In the US, the student visa is also known as the F-1 visa. Although students typically apply for a student visa immediately after receiving their admission, the process of obtaining it takes a considerable amount of time. This is the reason why many students begin to grow anxious, and the question arises in their minds: “When will the visa finally be issued?”

After applying for a student visa, the issuance process takes time because the application passes through several stages. Consequently, it becomes essential to check the status of your visa application. If a student knows exactly which stage their application is currently at, they can plan their travel to the U.S. accordingly. Therefore, let us explore how to check the status of a student visa application after submission, and which website needs to be visited to do so.

What is the official portal for checking visa status?

Student visa status can be checked by visiting the ‘Consular Electronic Application Center’ (CEAC) website of the U.S. Department of State. This serves as the official portal for checking visa status. To check the status, you will need the location where your visa interview was conducted, as well as the Application ID provided on your DS-160 form. Additionally, your passport number and the first five letters of your surname will be required. You can access the visa status page directly by clicking here.

How do I check my visa status?

After submitting the DS-160 form (Non-Immigrant Visa Electronic Application) and attending the visa interview, students can check the status of their visa application online. Visa status can be checked by following the steps outlined below.

Visit the CEAC website. Click on “Check My Visa Application Status” here.

  • Enter your details on this page. You will need to select the location of the U.S. Embassy where your interview took place.
  • Students must provide their Application ID or Case Number in the details section. The Case Number is issued by the U.S. Embassy.
  • You will also be required to enter your Passport Number and the first five letters of your surname.
  • Finally, complete the CAPTCHA and click “Submit.”
  • Once you click “Submit,” your visa status details will be displayed.

How to Interpret Your Visa Status?

After filling in all the details and checking your visa status, you will see various updates displayed on the homepage. Do not be confused by these status updates, as each one carries a distinct meaning. Let’s find out what each specific update signifies.

Application Receipt Pending: If this appears on the homepage, it indicates that your application exists within the system, but no action has been taken on it yet. This status typically appears when the visa interview has not yet taken place.

Application Received: If this status appears, it signifies that your application has been opened and is currently active. If your visa interview has already been conducted, please check your status again after two days for further updates.

Administrative Processing: This status indicates that the embassy requires additional time to review your application. They still need to conduct background checks and verify your documents. This process may take several weeks.

Issued: If this status appears, it means your visa has been approved and is currently in the printing stage. You will receive your passport from the embassy shortly.

Refused: This status indicates that your application has not been accepted. When an application is rejected, a formal notice is issued explaining the specific reasons for the decision.

If your status shows as “Issued” and you have not received your passport within 10 working days, you should immediately contact the U.S. Embassy where you appeared for your interview. During this time, you should also gather all necessary documents so that they can be presented if required.
