Summer Special Trains: There is great news offering relief to passengers planning to travel home during the summer holidays. Central Railway has announced that, in view of the anticipated heavy rush this season, more than 2,100 ‘Summer Special’ trains will be operated from Mumbai and Pune. This initiative will make it easier for lakhs of passengers to secure confirmed tickets and could significantly alleviate the hassle of being on waiting lists.

How many trains will run, and what makes them special?

According to the Railways, out of the total 2,100-plus special trains, 735 will be unreserved (non-reservation) trains, while 624 reserved trains will be available for passengers. These trains are being operated specifically with those passengers in mind who travel home or go on vacation during the summer season.

On Which Routes Will Trains Be Available Within Maharashtra?

Special arrangements have also been made for people traveling within the state. These special trains will operate on the Mumbai/Daund–Solapur, Pune–Kolhapur, Nashik Road–Badnera, and Hadapsar–Harangul routes. These routes typically experience heavy passenger traffic throughout the year; therefore, extra trains are being run this time to accommodate the demand.

Relief for Those Traveling Outside Maharashtra as Well

If you are planning to travel to other states, there is good news for you too. Special trains will also run on the Mumbai–Balia, Mumbai–Gorakhpur, Daund–Kalaburagi, and Solapur–Kalaburagi/Anakapalle routes. This will provide significant convenience to passengers traveling to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and South India.

Benefiting from the ‘Train on Demand’ Service

The Railways has stated that these special trains incorporate the existing ‘Train on Demand’ service. Additionally, in view of the anticipated heavy rush, extra new trains have also been introduced to ensure that passengers do not face any difficulties during their journey.

Railway Statistics and Preparedness

Indian Railways operated 76,352 special trains during the last financial year (2025-26)—a new record. Meanwhile, approximately 25,000 trains are currently running across the country on a daily basis. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railways is continuously working to enhance passenger comfort and safety.

How will passengers benefit?

  • The likelihood of securing a confirmed ticket will increase.
  • There will be relief from overcrowding and long waiting lists.
  • Long-distance travel will become easier.
  • Planning vacations will become simpler.
