New Delhi: The stay away of former West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay has come under question since the May 28 meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Government sources on Wednesday said that Bandopadhyay’s conduct has damaged the IAS system as it appeared that he was acting as a personal employee of the chief minister.
Bandopadhyay wants ‘Awards’ after retirement?
Sources questioned whether Alapan Bandopadhyay had subjugated himself to the “wish” of the West Bengal chief minister, so that he could be “rewarded” after retirement. He said that the Chief Secretary cannot function as a personal employee of the Chief Minister.

Shock to the IAS system
Sources said that the country’s first Home Minister, Sardar Patel, while addressing the first batch of IAS officers, described them as the ‘steel structure of India’. Sources said that Patel not only used this statement to inspire young officers but also had many meanings behind it that India is a multicultural nation where the rulers of the states will have their own interests and egos.
He said that if the representatives of the Center had boycotted the meetings called by the Chief Secretary after the natural calamity, would it not amount to institutional disintegration in the federal structure.
A source said, ‘Doesn’t this cause chaos? Alapan Bandyopadhyay’s May 28 conduct has caused serious damage to the IAS, whom Sardar Patel described as India’s ‘steel structure’.
