Weather Update: There will be heavy rain in monsoon season this year, weather department predicts

Monsoon Forecast Weather Update: According to the Meteorological Department, after the weakening of El Nino, the effect of La Nina is going to increase during the monsoon season. Due to this, more than normal rainfall may be recorded across the country.

IMD issues Long Range Monsoon Forecast: The Meteorological Department has predicted that this year there will be heavy rainfall in the monsoon season and there will be an average of 87 cm rainfall across the country. The Meteorological Department, while giving a long-term forecast of the South-West Monsoon, has said that there is an expectation of more than normal (more than 106%) rainfall between the monsoon season i.e. June and September. IMD has issued a release saying that at present El Nino is in the Pacific region near the equator, which is gradually weakening.

According to the Meteorological Department, after the weakening of El Nino, the effect of La Nina is going to increase during the monsoon season. Due to this, more than normal rainfall may be recorded across the country. Addressing a press conference on long-term forecasts of monsoon rains, M Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said that the long-term forecasts have been issued based on rainfall data from 1971 to 2020.

According to Ravichandran, the total average rainfall across the country in the four months from June 1 to September 30 can be 87 cm. According to the Meteorological Department, there could be an increase or decrease of 5 percent in the long-term rainfall estimate of 106 percent.

Along with this, IMD has said that there may be normal rainfall in most areas across the country, but there may be less than normal rainfall in the north-western states i.e. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Gangetic region of West Bengal and some states of the North-East.
