The Made in India Arattai app, seen as an alternative to WhatsApp, is now also offering end-to-end encryption for text messaging, strengthening user privacy.

Zoho Corporation’s Arattai app, which has been making waves for the past few days, is now adding a feature that will put WhatsApp in a spot of bother. This Indian-made app currently only supports end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls. Now, it’s expanding its chatting to end-to-end encryption. Once this feature is implemented, messages sent on the platform will remain private and unreadable by any third party, including the company. This feature has been available on WhatsApp for quite some time.

The company is preparing

Arattai’s popularity has increased manifold in the past few days, and the company is now working on strengthening its privacy features. Speaking to Moneycontrol, the app’s CEO, Mani Vembu, said, “We’re working on it. In personal messaging, we’re introducing a secret chat option, which allows users to enable encryption for private conversations. This isn’t the default yet. The entire team is now working on making it available to all users.” Prior to Vembu’s statement, several users on social media had raised questions about Arattai’s security architecture.

Arattai app was launched in 2021

Zoho launched the Arattai app in 2021 as a side project, but it failed to gain popularity. Recently, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Piyush Goyal urged people to support the app. Following this, downloads rapidly increased, and it reached the top of the list of most downloaded apps on the App Store. Like WhatsApp, it offers features like personal chat, group chat, voice notes, image and video sharing. The company that developed it claims that privacy is fully respected and it will never monetize personal data.
