8th Pay Commission: Ahead of the 8th Pay Commission, a major relief has arrived for railway employees. The Railway Ministry has revised the rates of Kilometer Allowance (KIL) and Alk Allowance (ALK), effective January 1, 2024. This change is particularly beneficial for railway running staff.

This decision was taken when the Dearness Allowance (DA) reached 50%. According to the rules, when DA reaches 50%, certain allowances are revised. Consequently, the rates of Kilometer Allowance (KIL) and Alk have now been increased, which will directly benefit employees’ income.

New rates have been implemented for railway loco pilots and other running staff. For example, loco pilots operating mail trains will now receive ₹606 per 100 kilometers and ₹969 per 160 kilometers. Similarly, different new rates have been fixed for loco pilots, shunting staff and assistant loco pilots of passenger and goods trains.

Not only loco staff, but also the allowances of traffic running staff such as guards have been changed. Mail Express Guards, Passenger Guards, and Goods Guards will now receive higher allowances than before.

This change has been made in response to long-standing demands from railway employees’ organizations. The All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) and the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) had been raising this issue. After considering the matter, the Railway Board obtained approval from the Finance Ministry, and then implemented the new rates. However, the Ministry has clarified that only the allowance rates have been changed; all other terms and conditions will remain the same. This means there has been no change in eligibility or payment method. Overall, this decision brings relief to railway employees.
