At present the Finance Secretary has denied the plan of 8th Pay Commission. According to NDTV report, Secretary TV Somanathan said, ‘At present there is no plan regarding constituting the 8th Pay Commission. Nothing has been decided about it yet. Statistics show that the number of central employees and pensioners is more than 50 lakh.

In fact, before the elections, governments have been using the Pay Commission to woo central employees, armed forces and pensioners. The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had constituted the 7th Pay Commission in 2013, just a few months before the general elections.

What is the update regarding pension?

The special thing is that till now BJP has not taken any such step. There are reports that the BJP government is focusing on reviewing the New Pension Scheme or NPS. The special thing is that it emerged as a big issue in the recently concluded Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. Apart from this, parties in five states Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram, Telangana and Chhattisgarh also strongly raised the issue of NPS and OPS i.e. Old Pension Scheme.

A committee has also been constituted by the government, which will review it. The Finance Secretary is heading the committee. “We have consulted all concerned and will file a report soon,” he said. There are possibilities that the government may make some changes in this, so as to ensure that the employee gets at least 40 to 45 percent of the last salary. However, nothing has been said officially regarding this.
