Inspections ordered at these airports

Following the disruptions affecting millions of passengers at airports across the country between December 1 and 8, the Ministry of Civil Aviation ordered senior officials to inspect 10 major airports, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Guwahati, Goa, and Thiruvananthapuram.

What happened when?

Officials arrived on the scene on Tuesday morning and inspected the terminals. The ministry reported that IndiGo had 3,171 scheduled flights from Mumbai during the eight-day period, but was able to operate only 2,266. The worst was seen on December 4 and 5. The number of cancelled flights increased from 14 on December 1 to 295 on December 5, though it declined slightly over the weekend. Delays were also high, reaching a peak of 281 on December 3.

According to a Times of India report, aviation officials stated that operational pressures led to flight disruptions throughout the week. Approximately 780 checked-in bags belonging to passengers on cancelled flights were pending delivery. Of these, 90 percent will be delivered to their addresses by Wednesday.

According to the data, a total of 40,789 passengers were affected by cancellations and 266,567 passengers were affected by delayed departures from Mumbai. The most disruptions to domestic flights from Mumbai were seen on routes to Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Cochin, Goa, and Lucknow.

Madhusudan Shankar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, said, “We inspected all locations, including cargo handling areas and baggage handling areas, and spoke to passengers. The situation has improved significantly. Airports have been instructed to ensure essential facilities like drinking water and minimize inconvenience.”
