Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has announced the launch of DigiYatra service at its facility. Nearly two months after resuming commercial operations, the airport has implemented this digital facility, which will provide passengers the benefit of faster and contactless entry. According to a statement issued by the airport management, Navi Mumbai International Airport has adopted this facility along with five other airports in the country under the nationwide DigiYatra campaign of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Remote Inauguration
The DigiYatra service was inaugurated remotely. The event was broadcast live to passengers inside the terminal. To mark the occasion, three passengers symbolically used the DigiYatra e-gate and also performed a ribbon cutting at the biometric entry point.
What is DigiYatra?
DigiYatra is a digital initiative that, through face recognition technology, allows passengers to access and process airport tickets without the need for physical documents and in a contactless manner. This technology uses:
- Airport entry and check-in processes are accelerated.
- Long queues are reduced.
- The passenger experience becomes more seamless and secure.
- According to airport management, the DigiYatra system adheres to strict standards of data privacy and security, ensuring the safety of passengers’ personal information.
- With the implementation of DigiYatra, the travel experience at Navi Mumbai International Airport has become faster, smarter, and more convenient than ever before.
Preparations to handle 90 million passengers at full capacity
Navi Mumbai International Airport has been designed to handle future needs, with the potential to handle over 90 million passengers annually once its four runways are fully operational. Currently, the airport operates from Terminal 1, which has an annual capacity of approximately 20 million passengers. This capacity will be further expanded under a phased development plan. The project gained momentum last October, when Prime Minister Modi formally inaugurated the airport. Navi Mumbai International Airport is considered a major step towards easing the growing air traffic pressure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and meeting future aviation needs.
