Bank Strike Alert | Banks may not open for four days. So if you have any important work, clear it this week. Know which days banks are open.
Bank Strike Alert: Bank employees are going on strike again. The strike was announced on January 27 demanding a 5-day work week. Banks usually remain closed on the second Saturday, fourth Saturday and Sunday of every month. The holidays are January 24, the fourth Saturday, January 25, Sunday and January 26, on the occasion of Republic Day. If the bandh takes place on January 27, banks are likely to remain closed for four consecutive days.
Bank employees believe that a five-day workweek will reduce their workload, allow them to spend more time with their families, and improve their productivity. Most Indian government offices and financial institutions already follow a 5-day workweek. Unions are demanding that banks follow suit.
The UFBU has announced that it is ready to work an extra 40 minutes a day from Monday to Friday to ensure that the services to customers are not disrupted if the employees reduce their working hours. According to the UFBU (United Forum of Bank Unions), RBI, LIC, GIC etc. already follow a 5-day work week. The foreign exchange market, money market, stock exchanges do not work on Saturdays. Central and state government offices also do not work on Saturdays. Hence, the UFBU is questioning why banks cannot also implement a 5-day work week.
UFBU is a large umbrella organization. It comprises 9 major bank unions in India. These unions represent employees of public sector banks and some old-style private banks. But this change will not be easy. RBI approval is crucial in this matter. Implementing such a 5-day work week in India’s large and diverse banking sector is a big challenge. It will not be easy to ensure that services run smoothly.
It is difficult for this system to run smoothly if there is no agreement between the employees and the bank management on issues like working hours, salaries, and operational changes. This decision of the bandh will not eliminate temporary difficulties for the bank customers. But the efforts made by the bank employees for the work-life balance are also a big thing.
