DIAL said the decision was taken after assessing the current condition of the runway after nearly 17 years of continuous use.
International Airport Runways Close: A major infrastructural upgrade is underway at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. One of the airport’s runways will be closed for approximately five months, starting February 16th. Announcing this, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated that Runway 11R/29L will be resurfaced and technically upgraded. DIAL stated that this work is part of a significant and long-term plan to improve safety and operational efficiency. However, despite the closure of one of Delhi Airport’s runways, flight operations will continue as normal without any major disruptions.
Delhi Airport’s Runway to Remain Closed Until July This Year
Delhi Airport’s third runway, which opened in 2008, will reopen in July this year after all upgrade work is completed and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) approves it. DIAL stated that this decision was made after assessing the current condition of the runway after nearly 17 years of continuous use.
What work will be done on the runway?
Runway resurfacing
Construction of a new rapid exit taxiway
Installation of a new Instrument Landing System (ILS)
There will be no change in air traffic movement
These upgrades are intended to improve safety, increase operational flexibility, and prepare the airport for future growth. DIAL clarified that during the period of one runway closure, the airport’s daily air traffic movement will remain at 1514 flights and will remain unchanged. Airlines and Air Traffic Control (ATC) have already been informed of the upgrade, and operational plans have been developed to ensure smooth operations. According to airport operator DIAL, detailed discussions and planning have been conducted with all stakeholders, including the Airport Authority of India (AAI), DGCA, and airline operators, to minimize any inconvenience to passengers.
