Senior Assam leader Bhupen Bora, who resigned from the Congress, is now joining the BJP. Bora served as the president of the Assam Congress from 2021 to 2025. Following his resignation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that Bora will join the BJP on February 22nd.
Bhupen Bora resigned from the Congress on February 16th. However, the party high command did not accept his resignation. Rahul Gandhi attempted to persuade Bora, advising him to reconsider his decision.
Speaking to reporters, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Bhupen Bora will join the BJP on February 22nd. Dilip Saikia will finalize the process. A large number of Congress leaders will also join the BJP in Guwahati and North Lakhimpur.”
Bhupen Bora described as the ‘last recognized Hindu leader in the Congress’
CM Sarma further said about Bhupen Bora, “He is the last recognized Hindu leader in the Congress. Our National President Nitin Naveen has already approved his joining and welcomed him. Bhupen Bora will be given full respect and dignity. Joining the BJP will be a homecoming for him, as it is a party that has many people like him whose fathers did not hold high office.”
Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited Bhupen Bora’s home after his resignation from the Congress party. Sarma arrived at Bora’s home in the Ghoramara area of Guwahati, where Bora’s wife and son welcomed him with an aarti (worship ritual).
