The Central Government has made it clear that no proposal for complete loan waiver for farmers is under consideration at present. Giving this information in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government’s focus is on strengthening the income and economic condition of farmers rather than loan waiver. She said that the government is running several schemes to provide timely and cheap loans to farmers. Specifically, under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC), crop loans up to Rs 3 lakh are being given at a subsidized interest rate. Along with this, farmers who repay the loan on time also get additional benefits. All this is being done under the “Modified Interest Subsidy Scheme”.

What are the details?

To provide relief to farmers, the government has also increased the limit for unsecured agricultural loans. Previously, this limit was ₹1.60 lakh, which has now been increased to ₹2 lakh. Furthermore, banks have been directed to provide adequate credit to the agricultural sector under Reserve Bank regulations, ensuring farmers have easy access to finance.

What did the Finance Minister say about PM Kisan?

The Finance Minister also stated that the government is transferring funds directly to farmers’ accounts through schemes such as the Crop Insurance Scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN). These measures are aimed at stabilizing farmers’ income and reducing risk, reducing their over-reliance on loans.

Meanwhile, in response to another question, he clarified the situation regarding disability pensions for the armed forces. He stated that this tax exemption was already in place and is now being explicitly incorporated into the new Income Tax Act 2025 to avoid any confusion. This means that this exemption has not been abolished, but rather, it has been more clearly continued.

According to the government, the new rules continue the existing system, not impose any new taxes or remove any old exemptions. Overall, the government’s message is clear: the focus is not on loan waivers for farmers, but on creating a strong economic support system, while also protecting the interests of military personnel.
