The Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has become the Indian government’s largest rooftop solar scheme, providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month by installing solar panels on rooftops. By December 2025, millions of households will have their electricity bills reduced to zero, and the subsidy is being directly credited to their bank accounts. This scheme is not only reducing electricity costs but also promoting solar revenue and clean energy.

New Delhi. The Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024. The aim of this scheme is to install rooftop solar panels on the roofs of 10 million households across the country, providing each family with up to 300 units of free electricity per month. The total budget for the scheme is ₹75,021 crore, and it is targeted to run until 2026-27. The government wants people to use their rooftops as a source of electricity and find relief from rising electricity bills.

The biggest benefit of this scheme is significantly reducing household electricity bills. For consumption up to 300 units, electricity bills can be reduced to zero. If solar panels generate excess electricity, additional revenue can be generated by selling it to discoms. This could potentially lead to annual savings of approximately ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. Besides, this scheme is also beneficial for the environment, because it reduces carbon emissions and promotes clean energy.

How much subsidy is available

The government is providing substantial subsidies on the cost of solar systems under this scheme. The subsidy is capped at ₹30,000 for 1 kW systems, ₹60,000 for 2 kW systems, and up to a maximum of ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more. This money is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account, usually within 30 days of installation and net metering.

Who can benefit from this scheme?

To qualify for this scheme, applicants must be Indian citizens. The house must be in their own name, their spouse’s name, or a joint name. The roof must be well-suited for proper solar panel installation and receive adequate sunlight. A valid electricity connection is required, and they must not have previously benefited from any other solar subsidy scheme. There is no income limit for this scheme, although the focus is on poor and middle-class families.

How to Apply Online

Application for the Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is completely online. One must visit the official portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Registration is done using the state, discom, consumer number, and mobile number. After logging in, one must fill out the application form, select a vendor, and determine the system’s capacity. After solar panels are installed, net metering is approved, and the subsidy is transferred directly to the bank account. A helpline number of 1800-180-3333 is also available for any assistance.

Latest Status as of December 2025

According to government data, approximately 19.46 lakh solar systems have been installed as of December 2025, and over 24.35 lakh households are benefiting from this scheme. Of these, approximately 7.71 lakh households have achieved zero electricity bills. Subsidies worth over ₹13,926 crore have been released so far. The government has also approved new models like RESCO and ULA to make payment and installation easier for people.

Why is this scheme special?

The Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is not just a subsidy scheme; it is also empowering people to become electricity consumers as well as producers. It is reducing household expenses, increasing the share of solar in the country’s energy needs, and moving India towards clean energy. This is why this scheme is expected to bring about a major change in the lives of ordinary people in the future.
