What is CBSE Open Book Exam: Many big changes are going to happen in the Indian education sector under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In view of the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) brought for implementation of NEP, the CBSE Education Evaluation Department has proposed to conduct Open Book Examination (OBE) as a pilot project in some CBSE schools for classes 9-12. A CBSE official said, this decision has been taken in the governing body meeting held in 2023 and the pilot project will be conducted soon.

The board has planned to conduct an open book test in its selected schools at the end of the year. Also, it is going to be introduced as an experiment for the students of class 9th to 12th in the month of November. With this, students will be able to take the exam by keeping their books, notes or other approved material with them at the time of exam and going through it.

What is open book exam?

Open book examination means that students will be allowed to take the examination by referring to their notes and other reading and study materials. This means that students appearing for the exam can find and write the answers from books and notes. Open book exam is conducted in two ways. The first is that students sit in the university campus and take the examination. They are given paper and answer sheet. Students can take help of their text book and other approved materials while taking the examination.

Another method of open book exam is online exam. Paper sets are sent to students online. They take the examination by logging in to the special portal of the university. Even during this examination, students can take help of text books and notes etc. As soon as the time limit expires, you are automatically logged out of the portal.

Benefits of open book exam

This will help them focus on assessing their higher-order thinking, skills, application, analysis, critical and creative thinking and problem solving abilities instead of the ongoing addiction to rote learning. Questions will not be direct but will be based on reaching a general overall understanding of the stud system related to particular concepts.

First there will be a pilot run on the examination of these subjects

CBSE has proposed a pilot run of open-book tests for English, Mathematics and Science for Classes 9 and 10 and English, Mathematics and Biology for Classes 11 and 12 in some schools. This is being done to evaluate the time taken by the students to complete it. This pilot run will determine whether it should be implemented in all schools.
