CBSE New Schedule Out: CBSE has implemented a new academic framework, which includes a three-language formula starting from Class 6 and a two-level system for Mathematics and Science for Class 9. This system will be effective from the 2026-27 academic session.
CBSE New Schedule Out: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has implemented its new academic schedule, under which a two-tier system for Mathematics and Science for Class 9, as well as the phased implementation of the three-language formula starting from Class 6, will commence from the academic session 2026-27. A senior CBSE official shared this information on Friday.
The official stated that, in accordance with the New National Education Policy (NEP), the mandatory three-language formula will be implemented for Class 6 starting from the academic session 2026-27, while a two-tier system—comprising mandatory Standard and optional Advanced courses—will be introduced for Mathematics and Science in Class 9. The official added that languages have been organized into three stages—R1, R2, and R3—within a structured three-language framework. As per the recommendations of the New National Curriculum Framework (NCF), two of these three languages must be indigenous Indian languages.
Third Language Made Compulsory from Class 6
He stated that, continuing the Board’s efforts toward the phased implementation of multilingual education, a third language will be made compulsory starting from Class 6 from the academic session 2026-27, thereby ensuring that every student studies at least two Indian languages. While the adoption of a uniform language scheme is desirable, in specific instances—such as when a student has transferred from a school abroad and the third language they studied there up to Class 8 or 9 is not available in Indian schools—an exemption may be granted in accordance with prescribed norms. However, it will remain mandatory for these students to study the total number of subjects stipulated in the study scheme.
Three-Language Formula to be Fully Implemented from 2031
According to an official, the third language—or ‘R3’—is not currently being made mandatory for Class 9 students. He stated that ‘R3’ level textbooks will be introduced this year for Class 6 students. These students will appear for their board examinations in 2031, and it is from that point onwards that the three-language formula will be fully implemented. The official further noted that the introduction of a two-tier system for Mathematics and Science for Class 9—commencing from the academic session 2026-27—will bring about a major structural change in both subjects.
He stated that all students will study the standard curriculum and appear for a uniform, three-hour examination carrying 80 marks. Students opting for the ‘High Proficiency’ track may choose to take an additional ‘Advanced’ level examination in either one or both of the subjects. At this level, students will be required to attempt a separate one-hour paper worth 25 marks, designed to assess higher-order intellectual skills and deep conceptual understanding.
The official clarified that appearing for the standard examination will be mandatory for all students, whereas the advanced examination will remain optional. Significantly, the marks secured in the advanced examination will not be added to the total aggregate score; instead, students who obtain 50 percent or more marks will have their ‘Advanced Level’ qualification separately indicated on their mark sheets.
First Class 10 Board Exam to be Held in 2028
He stated that the first Class 10 board examination—based on a two-tier system (Standard and Advanced) for Mathematics and Science—will be conducted in 2028. According to the official, ‘Computational Thinking’ and Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be introduced as compulsory subjects for students in Classes 9 and 10.
He further explained that these subjects will be introduced as modules involving internal assessment during the current academic session, and by 2029, they will become compulsory subjects for the Class 10 board examination. According to the official, under the new educational framework, the CBSE is making Art Education, Vocational Education, and Physical Education compulsory for Classes 9 and 10. He added that textbooks will be introduced for Art Education and Physical Education.
The official stated that, in the current academic session, the assessment of Art and Physical Education for Class 10 students will be school-based. In the 2027-28 academic session, Vocational Education will become a compulsory subject for them—for which an annual or board examination will be conducted—while the assessment of Art and Physical Education will continue to be carried out through school-based internal examinations.
