To reduce pollution in Delhi and to make people aware of electronic vehicles, the Delhi Government has launched the ‘Swach Delhi’ campaign. This campaign has been carried out to reduce pollution from electric vehicles and to give benefit of this to the people of Delhi. In this campaign, the Delhi government will tell how beneficial electric vehicles can prove to be compared to petrol and diesel powered vehicles.
The purpose of this awareness campaign is to tell people how electric vehicles can reduce pollution as well as reduce costs. This will reduce dependence on petrol and diesel and reduce people’s spending to a large extent. The Aam Aadmi Party government has decided that after six months the government will hire only such vehicles to promote electric vehicles. Most of these vehicles will be used in government work.
What is electric vehicle policy
In order to reduce vehicular pollution in Delhi, the government announced an electric vehicle policy in August 2020. The purpose of this policy is that by 2024, at least 25 percent of the vehicles on Delhi’s roads should be electric. For this, the government has also decided to give subsidy on the purchase of electric vehicles.
More than every state of the country, subsidies are being given for the purchase of electric vehicles in Delhi. According to the current policy, subsidy of up to Rs. 30 thousand is being given on two wheeler or three wheeler electric vehicles, on the other hand this subsidy is up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for four wheelers. The amount of subsidy is deposited in the bank account of the buyer and this amount is transferred within three days of the purchase of the vehicle.
Road tax free
Road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles in Delhi are absolutely free. To further promote this campaign, 100 charging stations are to be built throughout the city of Delhi and the government has also issued a tender for this. The Chief Minister of Delhi has appealed that big companies should build electric charging stations in the compound of malls, cinema houses, restaurants and commercial shopping complexes. Electric vehicles do not use petrol or diesel, instead they have to be charged with electricity. This automatically reduces pollution.
100 charging stations will be built
Charging stations will be needed to operate such vehicles, in view of which 100 charging stations are being built in Delhi. Since the announcement of electric vehicle policy in Delhi, 6 thousand such vehicles have been procured till now. It is likely to increase further in the coming time. To spread awareness about such vehicles, the Swachh Delhi campaign has been launched. It has been appealed to the government institutions of Delhi to help in spreading this awareness campaign to the people.
More than 1 lakh electric vehicles in Delhi
The Delhi government currently hires 1 thousand electric cars, which will be further increased in the coming time. Later, only electric vehicles will be hired in this category. According to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, 6 thousand electric vehicles have been purchased in Delhi so far and the government has spent Rs 9 crore as subsidy on this item. The Electric Vehicle Policy states that the target is to register 5 lakh electric vehicles in Delhi by the year 2024. At present, 1 lakh 22 thousand electric vehicles are registered in Delhi, most of which are e-rickshaws.
Price starts from Rs 9 lakh
There are currently 150 electric vehicle models in Delhi, with the lowest priced car starting at Rs 9 lakh. To reduce the burden of buyers and increase interest towards these vehicles, the government has announced a subsidy. According to experts, to reduce air pollution in Delhi, a ‘zero emission’ policy will have to be worked out and this will be done only when the EV policy is implemented within the stipulated time.
