Bihar Election 2025: e-EPIC is a secure and non-editable PDF version of the voter ID card. It contains a QR code containing the voter’s serial number, part number and other personal information. Voters can easily download it on their smartphone or computer and keep it safe in digital form

Bihar Election 2025: The Election Commission (EC) is bringing new technology in voter identification amid preparations for the Bihar assembly elections to be held later this year. The voter list will be published after the final special in-depth revision (SIR) on September 30. After this, voters of the state will start getting new tech-enabled voter ID cards.

What are tech-enabled voter ID cards?

These are a new and upgraded form of the traditional voter identity card (EPIC). Its main features will be:

  • It will have an updated photo submitted by the voter during the SIR process.
  • They will have modern security features like QR code, which will make it difficult to create duplicate or fake cards.
  • These cards will be issued in both physical and digital forms.
  • The digital version will be called e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card).

What is e-EPIC?

e-EPIC is a secure and non-editable PDF version of the voter ID card. It contains a QR code, which contains the voter’s serial number, part number and other personal information. Voters can easily download it on their smartphone or computer and keep it safe in digital form. It works as an additional facility with the physical card, that is, voters can use either the digital card or the physical card if they want.

Why are these being introduced in Bihar now?

Assembly elections are going to be held in Bihar in October-November this year. According to the draft rolls released on August 1, there are 7.24 crore voters in the state. The Election Commission says that the new voter ID will make the process of identification at polling stations easier, fake voting and impersonation will be stopped and the voter list can be made more accurate.

Why tech-enabled voter ID cards?

  • Eliminates delays in issuing cards.
  • Reduces the possibility of bogus voting.
  • Make the election process in line with the Digital India initiative.
  • Even if a voter forgets his physical card, the digital card will remain valid.

How will voters get a new ID card?

As per the Election Commission’s (ECI) plan, new applicants (who have filled Form-6 and registered mobile number) will be able to download their e-EPIC first.

Old voters will be able to download e-EPIC in the later stages, after completing the authentication process of their registered mobile number.

Physical cards will also be delivered at home. The Election Commission has now promised that the card will be delivered within 15 days of application. Also, voters will be able to do real-time tracking through SMS updates and NVSP portal.
