FASTag New Rules: There’s some good news for every car owner who has struggled with long lines at toll plazas on highways. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the discontinuation of the ‘Know Your Vehicle’ (KYV) process for issuing new FASTags for cars, jeeps, and vans from February 1, 2026. Previously, this verification was mandatory, resulting in hours of follow-up and hassle even after activation. Now, those purchasing new FASTags will no longer have to endure this hassle.

What will change for new FASTags?

After February 1, 2026, KYV validation will be eliminated when purchasing a new car FASTag. Banks will first check vehicle details against the vehicle database, and activation will only occur if the information is valid. As before, the verification feature will be discontinued after activation. If vehicle data is not available, verification will be required from the RC (Registration Certificate). The bank will assume full responsibility. The same rules apply to FASTags purchased online. This change will save time and fuel for millions of drivers.

What are the benefits to old FASTag holders?

Even currently issued car FASTags will not require routine KYV. If there are no complaints, there’s no need for inspections. However, KYV will only be required if a FASTag is found to be loose, incorrectly issued, or misused. Previously, everyone had to endure inconvenience..

Points to note

Although the KYV process is being discontinued, vehicle owners must ensure that their car registration and other documents are correct. Any errors during digital verification may delay the issuance of a FASTag.

This move will ease highway traffic. In the era of Digital India, FASTag has already digitized 98% of toll collection. But remember, always check your balance—or else you may be at risk of double charges.
