How much gold can be brought tax-free?
According to the rules, male travelers staying abroad for more than a year can bring up to 20 grams of gold (worth up to Rs 50,000) without any fee. At the same time, female travelers are allowed to bring up to 40 grams of gold (worth up to Rs 1 lakh). Children can also take advantage of this rule. This exemption is only for plain gold jewellery. Jewellery studded with diamonds is not covered under this exemption.
Want to bring up to 10 kg of gold?
Indian-origin passengers who have stayed abroad for more than six months can bring up to 10 kg of gold (including jewelry). However, it is mandatory to pay a fee on this. There are two major conditions for this:
- The fee has to be paid in foreign currency.
- Out of this entire 10 kg, only a small part will be duty-free, the rest will be taxed.
Red vs Green Channel
- If you are bringing more than the limit or duty-bearing goods, then you will have to go through the red channel and fill the baggage declaration form.
- If you have goods within the duty-free limit, then you can go straight through the green channel.
- Passengers can now also declare their luggage through the ‘ATITHI’ mobile app before starting the journey.
You may have to pay a heavy price for your mistake
The department is constantly warning passengers that any attempt to tamper with the rules is not free from danger. There is a provision for strict legal action under the Customs Act for giving wrong information or hiding goods, which includes seizure and fines as well as filing a criminal case.
