National Expressways Toll Cut: For users of a national expressway that is not yet fully operational, the government has issued amendments to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. This means that toll rules have now been changed for those traveling on incomplete expressways.
New Toll Rules: The central government has changed the toll rules on national expressways. Now, if an expressway is not fully operational, travelers will not be charged the full toll. They will only pay tolls for the portion that is fully operational. These new rules will come into effect on February 15th, following amendments to the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Full tolls will no longer be charged for incomplete expressways.
The Ministry stated in a statement that if a national expressway is not yet fully operational, the government has issued amendments to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. This means that toll rules have now been changed for those traveling on incomplete expressways. Previously, tolls were often charged for the entire route, even when large sections of the expressway were incomplete. As a result, travelers were required to pay for the entire length, even if they traveled only on a small portion of the completed route. This has now been changed under the new rules. Tolls will only be charged for the completed and operational portion. This will avoid unnecessary additional burden on travelers.
What will be the benefit?
This change is intended to encourage people to use the operational portions of the National Expressway more. According to the Ministry, this will reduce congestion on the old National Highway running parallel to the expressway and speed up passenger movement. Additionally, traffic jams on the old highway will be reduced. Furthermore, the new toll rules will benefit private vehicle drivers as well as truck and bus operators. The reduced toll will reduce transportation expenses for passengers.
Expressway Fee Structure
Fees on National Expressways are 25% higher than on regular National Highways (NHs), as these access-controlled corridors offer faster and more comfortable travel. Until now, the rule was that even if the expressway wasn’t fully operational, the higher toll was charged for the portion that was operational. However, this has now been changed with the new rules.
