Ganga Expressway: Construction of the Ganga Expressway, which began in 2021, is now complete. The Uttar Pradesh government has also completed its trial run and is preparing for its inauguration. The government intends to begin vehicular traffic on it from the new financial year, beginning April 1, 2026, to recoup the funds spent on it through toll collection. This 594-kilometer expressway will boost development in approximately 12 districts along the Ganga River and make it easier for motorists to travel from eastern Uttar Pradesh to western Uttar Pradesh.

Senior officials of the Expressway Industrial Development Authority say that the Uttar Pradesh government has contacted the Prime Minister’s Office to arrange for PM Modi to inaugurate the expressway. It is expected to be dedicated to the public between March 25 and 31. The authority intends to begin toll collection on the expressway from April 1st, so that the ₹36,200 crore expenditure incurred on it can be quickly recovered. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in December 2021, and the six-lane expressway is now fully completed. Running along the banks of the Ganges River, the expressway begins at Bijauli village near Meerut and ends at Judhapur Dandu village in Prayagraj. This connects Meerut directly to Prayagraj, facilitating easy travel from eastern Uttar Pradesh to western Uttar Pradesh.

Toll Trial Completed

Shri Hari Pratap Shahi, CEO of the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Authority (UPEIDA), stated that the expressway connects to the Meerut-Hapur Highway near Bijauli village and to the Phaphamau-Pratapgarh Highway near Judhapur Dandu village in Prayagraj. Shahi explained that the construction of 1,498 structures has been completed ahead of schedule. The toll collection management trial has also been completed. Currently, professionals are conducting tests on the driving experience and vehicle speed. Top officials are being contacted for the inauguration, and a final decision will be made based on their guidance.

The journey will be reduced to just 6 hours.

With the completion of the Meerut-Prayagraj Expressway, the travel time between the two cities will be reduced by half. Currently, this distance takes approximately 12 hours, but once completed, it will be covered in just 6 to 7 hours. This expressway will pass through 12 districts: Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. It will also connect 518 villages in these districts to the main road network, enhancing development in these villages and surrounding areas. A 3.5-kilometer airstrip has also been constructed near Shahjahanpur on this expressway, allowing emergency landings for aircraft.

How much will the one-way toll be?

UPDA has not yet announced the official toll rates, but sources suggest that a car toll of ₹2.55 per kilometer will be charged. This means a one-way toll of approximately ₹1,515. For small commercial vehicles, the one-way toll will be approximately ₹2,405, while for larger vehicles like buses and trucks, the toll will be ₹4,840. For heavy construction vehicles, the toll will be ₹7,455, while for vehicles with more than seven axles, it could be ₹9,535.
