NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27: The Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education has started the registration for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic session 2026-27. Under this scheme, eligible students studying in class 9 can apply for scholarship for the first time. Whereas students studying from class 10 to 12 can apply for renewal of their already receiving scholarship. The last date for application has been fixed as 31 August 2026 and for this students will have to use the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
NMMSS scheme is for economically weaker students
The objective of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker families to continue their studies. This scheme especially encourages students to continue their studies after class 8. One of the main objectives of this scheme of the Central Government is to reduce the problem of school leaving i.e. dropout. Students whose studies may be affected due to financial problems are helped in continuing their further education through this scholarship.
Who can apply for NMMSS?
Students studying in class 9 in government, government-aided and local body schools can apply for NMMSS. Apart from this, students studying in class 10, 11 and 12 can apply for renewal to continue their scholarship. However, for renewal, it will be necessary for the students to fulfill the prescribed conditions related to the scholarship. Apart from this, students can also apply for one or more scholarship schemes other than merit based scholarships like NMMSS, if they fulfill the eligibility of the respective scheme.
Application has to be made by 31st August
The last date for both new and renewal applications for NMMSS 2026-27 is 31 August 2026. In such a situation, eligible students will have to complete their application within the stipulated time limit. The application process will be online and students will have to go to the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for this.
How to apply for NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27
1. To apply for scholarship, first go to the website of National Scholarship Portal.
2. Students applying for the first time will have to first complete the process of New Registration.
3. After completion of registration, login to the portal with the help of the login credentials received.
4. After this, select National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) among the available scholarship schemes.
5. Now fill the required information in the application form and upload the necessary documents.
6.After filling all the information, check the form once and then submit the application.
7. After submitting the application, download the confirmation page and keep it safe for future reference.
After application, verification will be done in two stages
The process will not end after submitting the application for NMMSS. Verification of students’ application forms will also be done. This verification will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, the Institute Nodal Officer (INO) will verify the applications of the students. This process will be completed by 15 September 2026. After this, in the second phase, the District Nodal Officer (DNO) will verify the application, which is to be completed by 30 September 2026.
