Now toll tax will be deducted without stopping at toll plazas; NHAI is going to adopt new technology

Even with a FASTag affixed, getting stuck in long queues at toll plazas can be a source of frustration. No matter how many claims the NHAI makes regarding the efficacy of FASTags, the reality remains that vehicles still face delays at toll plazas. However, a solution to this problem has now been found. Vehicles will no longer need to come to a halt at toll plazas; the toll tax will be deducted while the vehicle is still in motion. Preparations are currently underway to implement this new technology.

To address the issue of traffic congestion at National Highway toll plazas, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to take another significant step. Toll taxes will now be deducted at plazas without requiring vehicles to come to a halt. To facilitate this, a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system will be implemented.

Motorists will not be permitted to use a single FASTag for multiple vehicles. If a FASTag is found being used on a vehicle other than the one it is registered to, it will be blacklisted. Furthermore, no alterations to the vehicle’s number plate will be permitted; all characters on the number plate must be displayed accurately and correctly.

Agra is home to more than half a dozen toll plazas. These primarily include plazas located on the Jaipur Highway, Gwalior Highway, New Southern Bypass, Agra-New Delhi Highway, Agra-Etawah Highway, and Hathras Road. A toll plaza is also scheduled to become operational on the Northern Bypass in the near future. Currently, long queues of vehicles frequently form at these toll plazas, resulting in a significant waste of both time and fuel.

An NHAI official explained that MLFF is a barrier-free tolling system. It allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas rapidly, eliminating the need for them to come to a halt. This system identifies vehicles using both FASTag and license plates. Consequently, a FASTag must be used exclusively on the specific vehicle to which it is registered.

Furthermore, there must be absolutely no tampering or alterations of any kind made to the vehicle’s license plate. To date, all trials conducted for the MLFF system have proven successful. The initial pilot was launched at the Choryasi toll plaza in Gujarat; subsequently, the system has been implemented at over two dozen toll plazas across Tamil Nadu.

The Technology

The MLFF system utilizes a combination of FASTags and AI-based license plate recognition cameras. The sensors embedded within these cameras rapidly scan and read either the FASTag or the vehicle’s license plate.
