Strong tremors were felt across northern Japan on Monday, registering a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale. Following the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning and urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate immediately. Additionally, Japan’s Prime Minister has established an emergency task force to coordinate the response to the crisis and has appealed to the public to leave coastal zones and move to higher ground for safety. As a result of the earthquake, bullet train services between Tokyo and Aomori have been suspended, and power companies are currently inspecting their facilities, including nuclear power plants.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake originated in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 10 kilometers. Immediately after the quake, officials warned of the potential for tsunami waves reaching up to 3 meters in height to strike coastal regions—specifically the prefectures of Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido. Consequently, people have been urged to stay away from coastal areas.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, issued emergency alerts for coastal regions. As a precautionary measure, ships at Hachinohe Port have been moved out to the safety of the open sea. Authorities have issued a warning that tsunami waves could strike the coast shortly, urging the public to strictly avoid approaching the shoreline. Evacuation operations for residents in Iwate and surrounding areas are currently underway on a war footing.

Train Services Disrupted

According to the Kyodo News Agency, bullet train services operating between Tokyo and Aomori were immediately suspended. There are also reports of damage to buildings and roads in several locations. Railway staff are currently inspecting tracks and stations to ensure that services can be safely restored.

Although no nuclear power plants are currently operational in the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions, inspections have been initiated as a precautionary measure. Tohoku Electric Power is currently inspecting the dormant Onagawa nuclear plant to detect any potential damage caused by the earthquake or tsunami. The Tokyo Electric Power Company is also assessing its power lines and other facilities.
