Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) gives passengers an easy way to cancel tickets purchased at the counters through its official website. IRCTC has provided an online way to cancel the counter ticket so that passengers do not have to go to the counters again.
You can avail this facility of IRCTC through its website or app. But it is very important to note that cancellation charges are applicable according to the time.
How to cancel train counter ticket online from IRCTC website
Here is the process you can follow to cancel a counter ticket online through the IRCTC website:
Step 1: Visit the IRCTC website and go to the ‘Trains’ section. Then, select “Cancel Ticket” and choose the counter ticket option.

Step 2: Enter the required details like PNR number, train number and the given captcha. Confirm the cancellation process by ticking the relevant box and then click on Submit.
Step 3: After submission, an OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to the mobile number provided during booking.
Step 4: Now confirm the cancellation request by entering the OTP received on the registered mobile number.
Step 5: Once validated, the PNR details will be displayed on the screen. Check this information carefully and proceed by clicking on ‘Cancel Ticket’. You will then be clearly informed of the total refund amount.
Step 6: After cancellation, you will receive an SMS containing the PNR number and refund details on your registered mobile number.
IRCTC rules for cancelling counter train tickets
> To cancel a train ticket, it is most important that you provide a valid mobile number during booking.
> Confirmed tickets can be cancelled only up to 4 hours before departure.
> For RAC/Waitlist tickets, tickets can be cancelled online up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure.
