The special CBI court in Panchkula on Monday gave its verdict in the Ranjit Singh murder case. The court has sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and 4 more accused to life imprisonment. Along with this, a fine of Rs 31 lakh has also been imposed on Ram Rahim by the court and Rs 50,000 each on the rest of the accused.

On October 8, the court had convicted Ram Rahim in the 2002 murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. Ram Rahim has been in jail since his conviction in 2017 for raping two followers.

CBI Special Prosecutor HPS Verma had told over phone that the special court convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others Kishan Lal, Jasbir Singh, Avtar Singh and Sabdil for murder.

Former Dera manager Ranjit Singh was shot dead in 2002. He was murdered for his suspected role in making an unknown letter viral. In this letter it was told how the Dera chief sexually abuses women in the Dera headquarters.

According to the CBI chargesheet, the Dera chief believed that Ranjit Singh was behind this unidentified letter to go viral and hatched a conspiracy to kill him.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two followers in 2017 and is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail. Two years ago, the Dera chief was also sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
