School Closed Today: The changing weather and severe cold in North India have once again thrown everything into disarray. Today, January 24, 2026, schools are closed in many districts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. While some are closed due to the fourth Saturday of the month, others are closed due to the cold and rain in the plains due to heavy snowfall in the mountains. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert for rain and snowfall.

In several districts of Uttarakhand (such as Dehradun, Tehri, and Pithoragarh), the administration has issued an official order closing schools today due to heavy rain and snowfall. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR, many government and private schools are closed for the fourth Saturday. Furthermore, January 26th (Republic Day) falling on Monday has provided a long weekend. This is a welcome relief for parents and students, as attending school amid the cold wave and rain would have been risky.

Schools Holiday, Home Fun

The last week of January has brought joy. January 24th, 2026, is the fourth Saturday of the month. As a rule, government schools and some private educational institutions in many states observe holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays. Additionally, classes have been suspended in some districts due to special events on the occasion of Uttar Pradesh’s Foundation Day (UP Day). Weather experts say that the activation of the Western Disturbance has brought down temperatures in Delhi-NCR and parts of Uttar Pradesh, leading to light rain.

Uttarakhand: Snowfall puts 12 districts on alert

Weather conditions are particularly severe in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Due to torrential rains and heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas, district magistrates in approximately 12 districts, including Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, and Chamoli, have declared a holiday for all schools from grades 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centers. Slippery mountain roads and cold weather make it unsafe for children to attend school. Schools are also closed in many areas of Himachal Pradesh.

Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Situation

While a statewide holiday has not been officially declared in Delhi-NCR, most schools are closed for the fourth Saturday. In Uttar Pradesh, due to the severe cold, local administrations (DMs) have been given the authority to change school timings or declare a holiday depending on the severity of the weather. Dense fog has reduced visibility to less than 50 meters in some districts, potentially posing a threat to school buses. However, there is no fog in Delhi-NCR today.

A long weekend this week

Students are in for a treat this week as a wonderful combination of holidays has formed:

  • January 24 (Saturday): Fourth Saturday/Bad Weather Holiday.
  • January 25 (Sunday): Weekly Holiday.
  • January 26 (Monday): Republic Day (National Holiday).
  • Schools in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal were also closed on January 23, 2026, for Basant Panchami.
