Smart Electricity Meters Update: There is a major update regarding consumers with smart electricity meters in UP. The Electricity Department will send messages to the mobile phones of these consumers. If these messages are ignored, your power supply will be disconnected without prior notice. Subsequently, you will have to make repeated rounds of the department offices to get it restored. In fact, smart meters are currently being installed rapidly across the entire state. The department utilizes the meter server connection to send alert SMS messages—up to five times—to the consumer’s registered mobile number whenever the meter balance is low, runs out, or goes into a negative balance.
To date, 150,000 smart meters have been installed in Bareilly, and within one year, the old postpaid meters currently installed in the remaining 700,000 premises will be replaced with smart meters. For new connections, only prepaid smart meters are being installed. Chief Engineer Gyan Prakash stated that when your existing postpaid meter is upgraded to a smart meter, it will continue to function as a postpaid smart meter. The Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam will convert it to a prepaid mode directly via its server; however, prior to this conversion, the consumer will receive an SMS on their registered mobile number specifying the date on which the meter will become prepaid.
Electricity Supply to Resume Within Half an Hour of Recharging
You will receive a second SMS once your meter has been successfully switched to prepaid mode. A third SMS will be sent when the balance drops to 30 percent, and a fourth when the remaining balance reaches 10 percent. If the balance hits zero—or falls below it (resulting in a negative balance)—you will be granted a three-day grace period to recharge. If the meter remains unrecharged even after this grace period, the electricity supply will be disconnected, and you will receive a fifth SMS notification. Power supply will be restored within a maximum of half an hour after a successful recharge. Under the postpaid connection system, a fee was previously charged to restore electricity after a disconnection caused by non-payment of bills; however, with the installation of a prepaid meter, you will no longer be required to pay this reconnection fee (RCDC).
If You Are Not Receiving SMS Alerts, Update Your Mobile Number
Chief Engineer Gyan Prakash stated that SMS notifications are being sent to the mobile numbers of consumers who have transitioned to the prepaid system. Regarding complaints from consumers claiming they are not receiving these SMS alerts, an investigation revealed that the mobile numbers originally registered with the department at the time of connection have either become inactive or have been reallocated to other individuals. If you wish to update your current mobile number, you can do so online at uppcl.org.in. Chief Engineer Gyan Prakash further noted that SMS notifications are being dispatched to consumers utilizing smart prepaid meters. Within one year, all electricity connections across the entire city are set to transition to the prepaid system. Consumers are urged to take the balance-expiry notifications seriously and ensure they recharge their accounts in a timely manner.
