If you miss the train, does the ticket not become useless?
If you have bought a train ticket and you miss the train, then there is no need to get upset and throw away the ticket. Many people make this mistake. Whereas doing this causes loss. As per the rules of the railways, your ticket can still be useful. If you have bought an unreserved or general ticket.
So you can travel in the general coach of any other train within the validity period with the same ticket. This benefit can be availed for 3 hours on short distance tickets and 24 hours on long distance tickets. However, let us tell you that this facility is not available for reserved ticket holders.
Reserved ticket holders can file TDR
If you had made a reservation and missed the train, even then your ticket does not become useless. In such a case, you can file TDR i.e. Ticket Deposit Receipt. By filing TDR, you can ask for a refund of your ticket from the railways. For this, you have to fill TDR online within 4 hours of the train leaving.
You can complete this process through IRCTC’s website or app. If you file TDR within the correct time limit, then the railways refunds your money after some deductions. Keep in mind that people with general tickets do not get this facility. This is applicable only on reserved tickets. On the other hand, if you have bought the ticket from your counter, then you will have to go there and file TDR.
