The Arvind Kejriwal government of Delhi has taken a big decision on arbitrariness regarding the fees of private schools. The government on Thursday ordered that all private schools in the capital will have to cut their fees by 15%. This order will be applicable for last year’s academic session i.e. 2020-21. It has also been said in the order of the government that if the schools have charged more fees from the parents, then they will have to return the money or adjust it in the coming year.
In the era of Corona epidemic, this decision of the Arvind Kejriwal government is a relief for the parents. On Thursday, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said that in the era of Corona, when parents are facing financial crisis, a 15% reduction in fees will be a big relief for them.
For example, if the school fees for a month in 2020-21 is Rs 3,000, then after 15% deduction, the school can charge only Rs 2,550 from the parents.
The government has also ordered that if any school has taken more fees from the parents, then the schools will have to return the money or adjust it in the coming year. Apart from this, the school management will not stop the students from participating in any activities of the school in case of non-payment of outstanding fees due to financial constraints of the parents. This order of the government will be applicable to all those 460 private schools, which had appealed in the High Court. All other schools will have to follow the same order related to fees, which was issued by the Delhi government on 18 April 2020 and 28 April 2020.
The High Court had asked to cut 15%.
Actually, the Directorate of Education, Government of Delhi, had issued an order prohibiting private schools in Delhi from charging annual and development fees from parents. After this the matter reached the Delhi High Court. The High Court said on this that private schools were given the freedom to charge annual and development fees in 2020-21.
However, the court had also said that private schools may charge annual and development fees, but they will also have to cut their fees by 15%. The court had also made it clear in its order that schools are free to charge full fees in the current academic session (2021-22).
