LPG Update: The government has stepped up the sale of small, 5-kilogram LPG cylinders to meet the rising demand for cooking gas. According to the Ministry of Petroleum, approximately 6.6 lakh such cylinders have been sold since March 23.

No Proof of Address Required for FTL Cylinders

Unlike subsidized 14.2-kilogram domestic cylinders, the smaller 5-kilogram cylinders—known as FTL cylinders—are sold at market rates, and providing proof of address is not required to procure them from a nearby gas agency. In a statement, the Ministry of Petroleum noted, “Yesterday (April 4), over 90,000 5-kilogram FTL cylinders were sold. Since March 23, 2026, approximately 6.6 lakh 5-kilogram FTL cylinders have been sold.”

No Shortage of LPG Cylinders

The Ministry stated that it has received no reports of any shortages among LPG distributors. Over 5.1 million domestic cylinders were supplied in a single day, and approximately 95 percent of the total demand was met through online bookings. Meanwhile, the administration has intensified its crackdown against hoarding and black marketing. Since March, more than 50,000 cylinders have been seized, over 1,400 show-cause notices have been issued to LPG distributors, and 36 dealerships have been suspended to date.

Commercial Gas Supply Also Restored to Previous Levels

The Ministry further stated that the supply of commercial LPG has been capped at 70 percent of pre-crisis levels, while the availability of smaller cylinders is being increased to alleviate demand pressure. Regarding natural gas, the government announced that full supply continues for domestic use and the transport sector; meanwhile, supply to fertilizer plants will be ramped up to approximately 90 percent of average consumption starting April 6, a move that will be supported by incoming LNG cargoes.

The Ministry stated that all refineries are operating at high capacity and adequate fuel is available at petrol pumps across the country. Additionally, people have been urged not to engage in panic buying and to rely solely on official information.
