The controversy started when BJP Meghalaya posted an image of the said jacket with a price tag of USD 995 (nearly Rs 64,000) which Rahul Gandhi had donned while attending a concert in the north-eastern state.
The hue and cry over alleged Rs 70,000 jacket of Rahul Gandhi does not seem to end anytime soon. Now, a BJP leader has transferred Rs 700 and dared Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury to send the jacket which she claimed could be bought at that amount.
BJP Delhi spokesperson Tajinder Bagga wrote on Twitter: Sent Rs 700 to Mrs Renuka Chowdhary. Please send me the same jacket to my office address in Tilak Nagar. 7A/2 Krishna Nagar, Tilak Nagar, New Delhi-110018.
The controversy started when BJP Meghalaya posted an image of the said jacket with a price tag of USD 995 (nearly Rs 64,000) which Rahul Gandhi had donned while attending a concert in the north-eastern state. A similar looking jacket is indeed listed at the said price on multiple online retailers active in Europe and the US.
The party from its Twitter handle, taking a dig at the term which Rahul Gandhi had coined for Modi—suit-boot ki Sarkar—wrote: So @OfficeOfRG, soot (pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with ‘black’ money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!
After the matter escalated, Congress spokespersons came ahead in his defence. Renuka Chowdhury gave a bizarre response when an ANI reporter asked her about the tweet. She said, “I can show you the same jacket for Rs 700.”
The comment resulted in a backlash from BJP leaders and Tajinder P Singh Bagga went on to challenge the Congress MP and transferred her Rs 700 through Paytm to prove that the same jacket could be bought for the same amount.
He also posted an image of the mail he received from Paytm confirming the transfer of money as a proof.
